Swine Flu and the Pandemic Alert

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have made it official, the Swine Flu is officially a concern. According to the World Health Organization we are at a phase 5 worldwide pandemic alert.

There is no question that the swine flu is contagious. It is another instance of a type A H1N1 virus, which means that it spreads through those airborne droplets of water that are released when we cough or sneeze.

If you are thinking that the best course of action is to change your diet and avoid eating pork products, lets clear up that point. You cannot contract swine flu from pork meat, but remember with any meats to cook at appropriate heats to the recommended temperature. What is the best way to avoid contracting swine flu? Great question! Proper hygiene is always a good course of action. Wash your hands often, toss those used tissues, and cover when you sneeze or cough. If you are a caretaker of someone with the flu you may want to use a basic mask as a precaution. But lets get realistic. Airborne viruses are tough to beat.
